SUMMARY:Open Source at UN Science Summit
DESCRIPTION:Martin Häuer\, Team Leader of Team C1 “Sustainability-Standardization” is confirmed as speaker at the United Nations Science Summit 2026. In the session “Open infrastructures for global health\, education and open science“\, he will talk about the importance of open source hardware for science and healthcare infrastructure. The session will take place online and a free registration is possible via this link: Register \nMartin Häuer was accepted with two session contributions: \nOpen Source Imaging\nMany public services\, including healthcare\, significantly depend on proprietary products and infrastructure. This tends to inflate the service costs enormously – to a simply unaffordable degree\, especially in the global South. The Open Source Imaging Initiative (OSI²) has developed an MRI scanner – which allows everyone to use\, study\, share\, and improve it – thereby counteracting the MRI oligopoly and opening up processes for clinical certification. OSI² aims to provide open-source reference technology that can 1) serve as a product standard\, 2) diversify supply chains (and eliminating vendor lock-ins) and 3) aid research e.g. via data comparability on fully characterized systems.This talk will give an overview of the initiative and outline the concept of democratic\, sovereign technology for critical infrastructure. \nOSH Standardization\nAs open source allows anyone to use\, study\, modify\, and redistribute material\, there is hardly any need to reinvent the wheel anymore. In software\, a global community is organically shaping standard solutions for even highly complex issues\, free for anyone to use\, adopt\, or commercialize. This is primarily enabled by open source licenses; the governance of individual projects almost becomes irrelevant\, as ineffective leadership can simply be replaced through a fork.However\, this model has its limitations. Such as one cannot simply fork a house\, some technologies come with a very high “cost of change”\, making it difficult for downstream users to replace them with variants that better represent their needs. This is the case for many open source hardware projects\, where design decisions can exclude entire regions from replicating\, maintaining\, or commercializing a product. Consequently\, more representative methods of decision-making are needed.De jure standardization\, despite claiming to be representative\, has seen little procedural innovation over the past 100 years and is often unfeasible for open source hardware. At the same time\, open standards processes in software generally do not claim to be representative and may prove equally unfeasible in the long run\, as decision-making can become dominated by individual actors.This talk will briefly outline the problem and propose a potential solution aimed at closing this gap. \n

SUMMARY:Just Transitions to a Net Zero World: Third Annual International Conference
DESCRIPTION:Durham University’s Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy (CSDLP) and the European Center of Just Transition Research and Impact-Driven Transfer (JTC) at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg are pleased to announce our third Annual International Conference on Just Transitions to a Net Zero World\, to be held at Durham University on 10-11 September 2026. \nCall for Abstracts is open\nBackground\nUnder the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement a broad theoretical consensus has been reached towards accomplishing – globally – the paths to a Net Zero World. How to implement this consensus at the national level remains a contested issue. The concept of Just Transitions encompasses a wide range of dimensions and perspectives\, reflecting the complexity of global shifts towards more just and low-carbon economy. They include labour-oriented approaches\, integrated justice frameworks\, socio-technical transition approaches\, governance strategies\, and public perceptions of what constitutes a ‘just’ transition. At a time when transition pathways and even their scientific necessity are once again subject to political challenge\, even the already existing just transition commitments are threatened. Our central concern is not merely what climate law and governance promise\, but how these frameworks can be modelled\, enacted and operationalised in practice. \nFirmly grounded in the theoretical work of the first two conferences\, this 3rd edition of our joint conference seeks to move beyond theory and explore the concrete and innovative pathways that translate agreed‑upon changes into practice. We welcome critical\, interdisciplinary and practice-oriented contributions that explore multifaceted pathways seeking to balance social\, ecological and economic aspects of transitions while remaining sensitive to context-specific factors. In Team B4 “Designer Proteins as Bio-based Binders” Ludwig Kraus successfully completed his Master’s Thesis titled “Rekombinante Produktion eines von Polychaeten-\, Kollagen- und Seide-inspirierten artifiziellen Bindeproteins (PCS) und dessen materialwissenschaftliche Charakterisierung”. For that\, he is now receiving the GBM Best Master’s Award 2026 with which the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology honours outstanding thesis in biochemistry and molecular biology and thus supports early-career researchers. \nThe thesis was supervised by Dr. Constanze Zwies within the research team of Prof. Dr. Markus Pietzsch. \nWe congratulate Ludwig Krauß to this outstanding work! \nProf. Dr. Thomas Scheibel (Bayreuth University) will give a Key Note titled „Engineering\, processing and application of protein based materials“. This experimental lab invites participants of all skill levels to join an ethnoGraphic experiment exploring collaborative modes of seeing\, sketching\, and engaging as a means to build bridges in an increasingly polarized world. \nThe European Association for Social Anthropologists\, EASA2026 conference “Anthropology: Possibilities in a Polarised World”\, is held at Adam Mickiewicz University\, Poznań\, Poland\, 21-24 July\, 2026. We invite participants to our Drawing Lab “Drawing the line: Ethno-Graphic encounters in times of conflict and polarization”. \nConvenors\nGregory Gan (Just Transition Center at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg)Yuliia Andriichuk (Adam Mickiewicz University)Isabel Bredenbröker (Universität Bremen)(with contributions from Laura Lamas Abraira) \nDrawing the line: Ethno-Graphic encounters in times of conflict and polarization\nAcknowledging anthropology’s ability to encounter\, witness\, and translate conflict in an increasingly polarized world\, what can the discipline do to contribute to a more cohesive dialogue across difference? Multimodal ethnography has shown promise in creating space for such dialogue by highlighting embodiment\, processuality\, and relationality in its methods. More specifically\, multimodal ethnographers engage with drawing as a sensorial\, body-mediated experience (Taussig 2009; Causey 2012). For Taussig (2011)\, drawing juxtaposes documentation and imagination; for Ingold (2011)\, the medium allows the ethnographer to be fully “present\,” and Jain (2021) describes drawing not as an illustration of an idea\, but the idea itself. Based on these prompts\, lab convenors propose to conduct an ethnoGraphic experiment\, inviting participants to draw in a collective\, participatory and non-judgemental way\, as a mode of being together\, and as a means of gathering impressions\, rather than forcing a point of view. \nGuided by a series of prompts\, we will explore what it means to create at the site of difference\, to engage with contentious topics\, and to invite both human\, and non-human actors into the process of co-creation. Weather-permitting\, part of this lab will take place outdoors. Lab convenors will ensure that the lab will be accessible to participants of all artistic levels\, and physical abilities\, and drawing supplies will be provided on site. The lab’s aspiration is to challenge our own attachments\, viewpoints\, and ideas about authorship in an open and sensitive manner as a critical opening into what it means to create together across difference. \n

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Hydropolitical Geographies: Critical Perspectives on Water in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:In June 2026\, team A6 of the Just Transition Center will host an international writing workshop on “Hydropolitical Geographies: Critical Perspectives on Water in a Changing Climate.” The workshop brings together around 20 international scholars from human geography and related disciplines to discuss ongoing research on water governance amid socio-ecological transformations. \nWater has become a central site through which the politics of the climate crisis are articulated. It is at once fundamental to human and other-than-human life\, while also increasingly at the centre of conflicts over access\, control\, and distribution. Intensifying hydrological extremes\, unsustainable patterns of use\, and the relevance of water for energy transitions further highlights its contested yet crucial role . Against this backdrop\, the workshop explores how hydrological flows\, water infrastructures\, and more-than-human relations are rearticulated . Bringing together perspectives from political ecology\, hydrosocial research\, and more-than-human geographies\, it aims to advance conceptual debates on how water is governed\, experienced\, and contested in a changing climate. \nThe workshop will feature keynote lectures by Jessica Budds (University of Bonn) and Denisse Roca-Servat (Universidad de Antioquia\, Columbia)\, thematic panels and a field excursion to the Bitterfeld-Wolfen region focusing on “Water and Transformation.” \nThe workshop is organised by Dr. Larissa Fleischmann & Julia Ostertag (Just Transition Center)\, and Dr. Tino Petzold (University of Münster / Goethe University Frankfurt).

DESCRIPTION:Symposium at Termis 2026: Accelerating multidisciplinary innovation to close the gap in clinical translation\nAt the conference TERMIS EU-Chapter “Accelerating multidisciplinary innovation to close the gap in clinical translation” from April 21 to 24\, 2026 in Palma de Mallorca\, Dr. Constanze Zwies will lead a symposium titled “Recombinant proteins for tissue engineering applications”.  \nProteins as essential component of the extracellular matrix are of significant importance for physiological wound healing and the artificial reproduction of tissue by forming an optimal scaffold for cell growth\, binding important signaling molecules and presenting peptide-motifs that control cell differentiation. In contrast to natural protein-based materials in tissue engineering e.g.\, Collagen\, GelMA and Fibronectin\, recombinant proteins can be a great benefit. Their potential for medical applications can be increased immensely through their genetic modification. With the design of artificial proteins via biomimetic approaches or even AI-based techniques we can expand the sequence-space that nature does not use in order to find new and improved functionalities according to the special needs of the biomaterial.This symposium will deal with the opportunities that bioengineering and biotechnological approaches enable. DESCRIPTION:Praxis & Perspektiven ist ein Gesprächsformat\, das den Austausch zwischen Gründer*innen und Teilnehmenden des Graduiertenschulteils „Transfer“ in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Im Fokus stehen reale Erfahrungen aus der Praxis und unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf die Themen\, die während des jeweiligen Semesters behandelt werden. \nDie Veranstaltung gliedert sich in zwei Teile: einen Seminarteil und einen Gesprächsteil (je ca. 90 Min). Im Seminarteil werden die zentralen Erkenntnisse des Semesters noch einmal aufgegriffen und gemeinsam reflektiert. Daraus entwickeln sich die Fragen\, die an die eingeladene Person gerichtet werden. \nIm zweiten Teil findet das Gespräch statt. Es orientiert sich am jeweiligen Oberthema des Semesters (z. B. Stakeholder\, Zusammenarbeit usw.) und knüpft an die inhaltliche Vorbereitung aus dem ersten Teil an. Gleichzeitig bleibt Raum für Fragen\, die aus dem Moment heraus entstehen – aus dem Interesse der Teilnehmenden und aus dem gemeinsamen Nachdenken über Praxis. \nTeilnehmen können alle Promovierenden der MLU sowie anderer wissenschaftlicher Einrichtungen\, auch diejenigen\, die am Seminar im Semester nicht teilgenommen haben. SUMMARY:Book presentation: Environment & Archive: Oppositional Surroundings in the GDR
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Wolter presents his book „Environment & Archive: Oppositional Surroundings in the GDR“\, which examines environmental destruction in the former GDR\, including in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. \nTo do so\, he investigated photographic collections from the Archive of the GDR Opposition at the Robert Havemann Society and from the Stasi archives. In the process\, Wolter traced cross-connections between the concepts of “environment” and “archive” within the historical context of the GDR environmental movement. The result is a media-ecological study in which he brings together different categories of photographic representation and highlights the interface at which the environment is inscribed in photographic images—and at which photographing itself\, in turn\, intervenes in the environment. \nOn December 5\, Wolter will present the book at CITTIPUNKT Berlin. DESCRIPTION:At universities\, as well as within general research funding guidelines\, there is a growing demand for transfer-oriented projects to generate concrete societal impacts. \nAs a result\, many academic disciplines have developed new forms of cooperation\, transfer methods\, and practices of translation between science and society. However\, it remains insufficiently understood how scientific and practice-related requirements can be mediated and addressed in day-to-day work processes. \nThis is precisely where the workshop comes in.
