Ralf Wehrspohn ist seit 2006 Professor für Experimentalphysik an der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Lehrstuhl für mikrostrukturbasiertes Materialdesign. Er ist außerdem Mitgründer und Geschäftsführer des Deutschen Lithiuminstituts (ITEL). Er promovierte in Physik in Oldenburg und Palaiseau (Frankreich) und war Nachwuchsgruppenleiter am Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik in Halle. Von 2006 bis 2019 war er Institutsleiter des Fraunhofer-Institut für Mikrostruktur von Werkstoffen und Systemen IMWS und später im Fraunhofer-Vorstand zuständig für Technologiemarketing und Geschäftsmodelle.

Prof. Wehrspohn war Mitglied der Mitglied der Kommission für Wachstum, Strukturwandel und Beschäftigung (Kohlekommission) der Bundesregierung und hat das Konzept des European Center for Just Transition Research and Impact-Driven Transfer (JTC) mitentwickelt. Seit 2024 ist er als Vorstandsmitglied und Säulensprecher der Natur- und Materialwissenschaften am JTC tätig.
