Open Source-Hard- und Software hat das Potenzial, kritische Infrastrukturen zu tragen. Wir untersuchen, wie Open Source als Standard eingesetzt werden kann, um die Geschäftswelt inklusiver und demokratischer zu machen.

Open-Source-Software (OSS) ist das Rückgrat der digitalen Welt – 96 Prozent aller Codebases nutzen OSS. Open-Source-Hardware zeigt bereits sehr ähnliche Dynamiken. Wir forschen an der Schnittstelle von Open-Source und Normung und erforschen, wie nachhaltige Geschäfts-, Governance- und Eigentumsmodelle für Commons-Public-Partnerships gestaltet werden können.

Normung hat sich als solide Plattform für gesellschaftlichen Konsens in komplexen technischen Fragen erwiesen – besonders für konkurrierende Akteure. Sie schlägt eine Brücke zwischen Regulierung und Markt und setzt auf progressive demokratische Prinzipien.

Die Umsetzung dieser Normen entspricht praktisch jedoch nicht immer den gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen an Interoperabilität, Inklusivität und Nachhaltigkeit. Viele Gremien ähneln „old boy’s clubs“ und werden von dominanten Akteuren geprägt. Gleichzeitig verändern Open-Source-Technologien die Landschaft grundlegend und stellen die Regularien von Normungsorganisationen infrage.
Open-Source hat das Potenzial, kritische Infrastrukturen zu tragen. Kein Anbieter die volle Kontrolle über Lieferketten, Wartung oder Ersatzteile. Doch Open Source als Standard durchzusetzen, ist schwierig: Regulierungsbehörden fehlt oft das nötige Verständnis, vertikale Governance-Modelle greifen nicht und klassische Geschäftsmodelle scheitern häufig – denn es geht um Ökosysteme, nicht um Einhörner.
