The innovation teams within Pillar B at the JTC are developing technological solutions to address structural change in southern Saxony-Anhalt. The projects are at various stages of development: ranging from concrete applications, including pilot schemes for soil restoration in post-mining landscapes, to fundamental research into new materials for photovoltaics.
Another of the JTC’s tasks is to support spin-offs and start-ups. The teams in Pillar B are well-equipped to transform their research into market solutions.

Our researchers are developing new applications for existing materials (e.g. soil improvement using iron hydroxide slurry from the mining industry) or sustainable, non-toxic alternatives to widely used materials (e.g. lithium-free batteries, formaldehyde-free adhesives). In their search for materials, they focus in particular on raw materials available in the region (e.g. the efficient recycling of old mine waste heaps).
