From 29 September to 2 October 2025, the biennial conference of the German Association of Social and Cultural Anthropology (GASCA) took place at the University of Cologne. Under the theme “Un/Commoning Anthropology – Social and Cultural Anthropology and the Question of What – and Whom – Should Be Held in Common”, the conference addressed central questions of community, difference, and the commons in anthropological thought and research.
Through panels, roundtables, film screenings, and exhibitions, participants explored current issues such as global inequalities, sustainability, migration, digitalization, and postcolonial perspectives. The JTC was represented by Dr. Gregory Gan from the Innovation Team A3 “Networking With Regions Undergoing Structural Change”.
Gan gave a presentation in the panel on Visual Anthropology, titled “Uncommon Time: Temporal Landscapes of the Post-Unified ‘City of Chemical Workers,’ Halle-Neustadt.”
Together with Stephanie Loose, he also presented the film “Empathy for Concrete Things” as a multimodal installation. The film was part of the exhibition “Out of Focus” at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum.
