Structural analysis of crystalline rocks in Saxony-Anhalt

Petrology of Raw Materials

What is the deformation and stress history of potential crystalline rocks for final storage, and what significance does this have for their suitability for final storage?

Objective

Analysis of the deformation history and tectonic stresses in crystalline rocks potentially suitable for the final disposal of radioactive waste.

Background

Crystalline rocks, particularly plutonic and metamorphic rocks, are potentially suitable for the final disposal of radioactive waste. It is important to explore the structural properties of these rocks as thoroughly as possible, since, for example, fractures and faults can serve as pathways for fluids. Therefore, fieldwork and the collection of structural data are being carried out at the Kyffhäuser Crystalline Complex and the Ramberg Pluton in order to identify both regional and local tectonic elements in these lithologies and to map their distribution.
